The World Bank has delayed a $90 million loan to Uganda over its approval of an anti-gay law that has drawn widespread criticism from the US, the United Nations and rights groups, the Associated Press reports.

A World Bank spokesman told AP that the loan was intended to help the East African nation's health systems. He also noted that the World Bank wants to ensure that the development objectives of the project would not be adversely affected by the approval of the new law.
Earlier this week, President Yoweri Museveni signed the bill saying that he wants to stop Western groups from promoting homosexuality in Africa, AP reports. The bill also calls for life in prison for those convicted of participating in gay sex.
