Kaduna state police Chief Bala Nasarawa told the Associated Press that the traditional ruler and his wife were killed Friday morning in the town of Kafanchan despite the recent deployment of troops to the area. Nasarawa said the report of the killing came soon after the police relaxed a curfew from 24 to 8 hours.

The region of Nigeria has seen repeated riots over the last few days. The protest is the second in two days in the area over insecurity. Last week the killing of two women in a church of a nearby town also sparked riots.

The violence has been attributed to the ongoing conflict between Nigeria's predominantly Christian south and Muslim north. This isn't the first time that women have protested the conflict. In April thousands of Christian Nigerian women protested sectarian violence after 500 people died in postelection violence.

Can you say, "Stop the violence"? Religious conflict is supposed to be oxymoronic. However, it is anything but that. Kudos to the women for protesting the lack of security facing the region. Committing violence under the guise of religious preservation is unacceptable and devastating to world communities.
