In the suit, the Florida rapper, 48, alleges that each one of these artists stole the beat of the 2008 track, โMe & My Goons,โ without permission, according to TMZ.
Soulja Boy is the first artist Plies names since he was the first one to allegedly use the โinfrared countdownโ beat without his permission on the popular 2010 track, โPretty Boy Swag.โ This song was the anthem for kids who grew up in the then-bourgeoning โSwag era.โ
Plies also named GloRilla, Megan Thee Stallion, and Cardi B, claiming that they all used the beat on the 2024 song, โWanna Be.โ (Cardi B is only featured on the remix of the track).
But the Florida rapper is not just naming these artists...heโs also going after their labels and production companies: According to TMZ, plies also named Universal Music Group, Collective Music Group, Interscope Records, Soulja Boyโs Collipark Productions, and Megan Thee Stallionโs Hot Girl Productions.
He is seeking unspecified damages.
Younger hip-hop fans may know Plies โ real name Algernod Lanier Washington โ mainly as an internet personality, but heโs also a rapper whoโs worked with his fair share of popular artists, including Usher, Ne-Yo, Lil Baby, Akon, and many others.
If you pay just a little attention to music, you know that copyright infringement cases are a norm in the industry. Many of the biggest artists in the world have been named in these suits, including Pharrell, Kanye West, Drake, Beyoncรฉ, Lil Wayne, 50 Cent, and many others.
