โ€œStaffers were set to work through the weekend, in hopes of crafting a compromise that could avert the United States beginning to default on its debt starting Aug. 2," writes Michael McAuliff.

The talks, which lasted about 50 minutes, came a day after President Barack Obama announced a breakdown in talks. During the press briefing on Friday, he said that U.S. House Speaker John Boehner walked out of negotiations to extend the country's debt ceiling.

He then announced a meeting with leaders of Congress at the White House today, saying, "We have run out of time, and they are going to have to explain to me how it is that we are going to avoid default. And they can come up with any plans that they want and bring them up here and we will work on them. The only bottom line that I have is that we have to extend this debt ceiling through the next election, into 2013."

Indeed, waiting on a debt deal is starting to feel like waiting for Godot.
