Although Coates has been a frequent critic of the president's efforts to address racial inequality, Obama will read Between the World and Me, a memoir about being black in America, during his 16-day vacation on Martha's Vineyard, the report notes.

The other five books on Obama’s list, according to The Hill, are a mélange of fiction and nonfiction: All That Is, by James Salter; All The Light We Cannot See, by Anthony Doerr; The Sixth Extinction, by Elizabeth Kolbert; The Lowland, by Jhumpa Lahiri; and Washington: A Life, by Ron Chernow.

Besides catching up on his reading, the president has played several rounds of golf and enjoyed meals with the first lady, friends and advisers, the report says.

The president is due to return to Washington Aug. 23.
