"The only thing I think first, man, 'Make sure those ribs is right,' " Wright told KMPH while proudly holding his well-done ribs. "I ran over and got my family, man. I [brought] everybody out safely, man. I carried everybody out myself, man โ€ฆ I did that. You feel me?"

He also ran back into the smoke-filled house to make sure he had his ribs, because any good grill master will tell you that at the end of the day, what is safety when ribs are on the line?

"I got my kids firstโ€”first thing, I got my kidsโ€”and I thought about my ribs. And I thought I didn't want to let my ribs burn and stuff because I take pride in what I do. It was 3:00 a.m. and I was hungry," Wright said.

The news station notes that a woman and child were treated for smoke inhalation at a local hospital and that Wright's early-morning grilling didn't cause the blaze.

Given time to reflect, Wright didn't miss the seriousness of what could have been. "It was frantic. It was real serious, man," Wright told KMPH, adding, "I'm gonna enjoy this barbecue though, man."
