Just when we thought 2024 was winding down and we had time to take a breath, the year had one last crazy card to play. Two of the most high-profile criminal cases of the year have crossed over in an unexpected way.

According to CNN, after his highly publicized law enforcement helipad escort on Thursday, Luigi Mangione, who is accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, is now in federal custody. Heโs been remanded to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, the same prison where embattled music mogul Sean โDiddyโ Combs has been locked up since his arrest in September on charges of sex trafficking, conspiracy and racketeering.
As if that wasnโt enough 2024 craziness, the two men also share a defense attorney. On Thursday, Marc Agnifilo, who is representing the Bad Boy founder, appeared in court alongside his wife, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, officially joining Mangioneโs defense team.
In any other year, we would never think Combs and Mangioneโs cases would cross paths, but in 2024 it was almost a guarantee that this would happen. Since Mangione has become an internet phenomenon and people love making jokes about Diddyโs situation, social media had plenty to say about this turn of events.
One person referenced the drama โPrison Break,โ which features two brothers pulling off an elaborate escape, writing on X, โSomeone said โReal life Michael Schofield and Lincoln Burrows.โโ
Another user pointed out the PR optics of the situation, posting, โtell me [itโs] staged without telling me [itโs] staged.โ
Someone else noted how public perception has changed, writing, โWho is more famous now. Iโm confused.โ
With all these high-profile inmates in the same prison, another person wondered if weโve entered a โBatmanโ movie, writing, โHow many more before they rename it Arkham? Asking for a friend.โ
Mangione is facing both state and federal charges, so itโs too early for a timetable on his case. Combsโ trial is currently scheduled for May. This means weโre in for months of stories about these two possibly crossing paths behind bars. Seems like 2025 is probably going to pick up where 2024 leaves off.
