Skee-Yee for Kids: Is Sexxy Red About to Pivot to Children’s Music?

The "Pound Town" rapper and her music have become the subject of online fodder thanks to a viral video about its appropriateness for children.

If you see Sexxy Red and youโ€™re trying to see whatโ€™s up...then you might be surprised to learn that the โ€œSkee-Yeeโ€ rapper may just be pivoting to a new genre: kidโ€™s rap.

The potential change in pace comes after the rapper and her music were the subject of a TikTok video where a childrenโ€™s ballet teacher admonished educators and parents to actually work with their children and teach them how to respect authority figures, boundaries and be more diligent about keeping content that isnโ€™t meant for or good for them at their age away from themโ€”like Reddโ€™s music. She then went on to describe a scenario where she was teaching a class and instead of the ballet music, her students requested instead that she play Redโ€™s hit โ€œPound Town.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s horrifying. Your five-year-old daughters are asking to listen to โ€˜Pound Townโ€™ and โ€˜SkeeYee,โ€™โ€ she said. โ€œYour daughters, your five-year-old daughters, are asking, โ€˜Can we hear โ€˜Pound Town?โ€™ Iโ€™m playing them Princess Tiana, ballet music and they are asking me, โ€˜Can we hear Pound Town?โ€™โ€

She later added: โ€œWhereโ€™s the parenting? Whereโ€™s the boundaries? Whereโ€™s the help? Yโ€™all are not helping your kids, youโ€™re hurting them.โ€

In response to the viral video, Red responded in a since-deleted tweet, โ€œGirl play poundtown skeeyee & stfu.โ€

But it appears she may have had a change of heart (I say this with every sarcastic bone in my body), as she later followed that response up with: โ€œIma make some kidz bop songs for yall fr,โ€ as captured by Complex. Her Twitter/X account has since been suspended.

Now whether or not Red actually decides to make a Turn Up for Toddlers tape or not, what bears repeating is the sentiment put forth by the concerned teacher about the importance of making sure our kids are exposed to things that are age-appropriate. And while we, of course, canโ€™t tell anyone how to parent their children, I would hope we would all agree on the fact that those precious minds are our future and it would be more advantageous than not to make sure theyโ€™re ingesting the right things for their malleable minds.
