The San Antonio police officer who claimed that he feared for his life when he shot and killed an unarmed man has been placed on indefinite suspension.

According to the Associated Press, Police Officer John Lee has been issued an โ€œindefinite suspension for placing himself unnecessarily in a tactical situation wherein he felt compelled to use deadly force,โ€ Police Chief William McManus wrote in a statement.ย 

On Feb. 4, officers arrived at a San Antonio apartment complex where they were supposed to serve 36-year-old Antronie Scott warrants on drug and felony weapons charges. Officer Lee, a 10-year veteran of the department, shot Scott, who was standing outside his car holding a cellphone.

Police spokeswoman Romana Lopez said that โ€œan indefinite suspension is equivalent to being fired,โ€ but could not specify a timetable for termination, AP reports.
