According to the news station, police began investigating at Houston Middle School in Germantown, Tenn., earlier this month after inappropriate texts were found on a child’s phone from a number that reportedly belonged to LeRico Mathis.

Mathis is a former Memphis Tigers football player who also helped coach Houston High School’s football team.

Germantown police did not have enough evidence to arrest Mathis, but Germantown Municipal Schools decided that what was found was enough to fire the teacher, according to WREG.

“You need to know what’s going on in your child’s life,” one parent told the news station. “If it’s inappropriate behavior, we need to know about it. I’m glad the parent caught it.”
