The new documentary A Broken Promise in Texas: Race, the Death Penalty and the Duane Buck Case, released by the NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, sheds light on the 1997 Texas death-penalty trial of Duane Buck, an African-American man who was convicted of shooting three people, two of whom died.

The controversy: Jurors listened to Walter Quijano, a psychologist, deliver testimony suggesting that Buck's blackness meant that he would likely commit another violent crime in the future. Quijano's comments are at the center of Buck's appeal of his death-penalty sentence; the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals is currently considering his request for a new sentencing hearing.
