That remains to be seen, but actress Regina Hall confirmed to BuzzFeed News that a sequel is in the works.
During a visit to AM to DM, Hall said, โWeโre trying to make that happen. So weโre trying to get everything together with the schedule. I think theyโre working on something. I donโt know where weโre going. I donโt know where the girls are going, but โฆ weโre going somewhere.โ
The original Girls Trip, which was written by Kenya Barris (Blackish) and directed by Malcolm D. Lee (The Best Man), dispelled any belief that a film featuring an all-black cast canโt make money when it grossed $140.9 million at the box office. Hall appeared along with actress and comedian Tiffany Haddishโin what would prove to be her breakout roleโJada Pinkett Smith and Queen Latifah. The four women played college friends who reunite for a trip down to New Orleans during Essenceโs annual music and entertainment festival. The adventures and misadventures they get into kept audiences in stitches all summer long.
Although no official announcement of a sequel has been made yet, Lee told EW that they wanted to do one.
โThe audience really took to it, I think theyโd want to see what the Flossy Posse is up to next and Iโm hoping that we can make that happen and bring that to the masses,โ Lee said.
โIt has to be a little bit bigger, it has to be just as good, just as funny, just as outrageous and that takes time. Weโve got to figure out how thatโs all going to come together and coalesce in a script and make it worth our time as filmmakers, their time as actors, and the audienceโs time as consumers. So we donโt want to do it if itโs not going to be great. We want to make sure that itโs a quality piece of work,โ he added.
Sometimes sequels fail to capture the magic of the first film, but in this instance, itโs safe to assume more laughs and good times will be had.
