Viewers couldnโ€™t get enough of the viral one-liners either, including, โ€œWe gonna kill every last one of you,โ€ and โ€œWeโ€™ve been gone a long time. We back now.โ€ But others are taking a more critical approach to the Michael B. Jordan-led film.

TikTok user @hennymedia took to the platform to share how, โ€œSinners was a great time... I thought it was a really engaging narrative, for the most part โ€” very well-acted, well-produced, well-choreographed, well-directed,โ€ but had a thing or two to say about the writing.

โ€œAnytime anyone takes on magical realism, I canโ€™t shut off my critic brain whenever Iโ€™m watching it,โ€ he began. โ€œ โ€˜Sinnersโ€™ approached the mark, flirted with it... but never fully embraced it.โ€ He admitted heโ€™s โ€œjust picky,โ€ but picked on how โ€œthe first hour of the movie was involved in so much exposition I feel like I didnโ€™t need. โ€˜Sinnersโ€™ is doing a lot to track the lineage of Black American music and its relationship to whiteness. I felt like they couldโ€™ve really used valuable world building instead of exposition for some characters that felt like in some moments were a lilโ€™ too stock.โ€

He wanted the movie to show the difference between โ€œwhat is secular and what is fully associated with the Black church,โ€ in reference toย Sammie, whose story he says wasnโ€™t complete. โ€œThe way Sammie is singing at the venue is not the way youโ€™d be singing at church,โ€ he added. He wanted an earlier scene in the movie to display Sammieโ€™s โ€œvulnerability in church... [that] wouldโ€™ve made it more a complete narrative.โ€

One content creator asked his viewers, โ€œHow can somebody invite a vampire into your home? They donโ€™t pay no bills, [they] not on no deed. I thought I had to invite them into my home, not my guest get to invite them into my home. That donโ€™t make sense! You canโ€™t invite somebody to my crib and I donโ€™t know about it.โ€

Another TikTok user admitted she โ€œf*****g hated โ€˜Sinners.โ€™ I am so disappointed. ... When I say itโ€™s so f*****g boring. Itโ€™s too much going on, make the storylines connect, make it make sense! It was trying to be too educated, just be a vampire movie!โ€

One user slammed negative online reviewers who admitted they โ€œjust didnโ€™t get it.โ€ She reasoned, โ€œItโ€™s because you just didnโ€™t want to get it. Itโ€™s because you not โ€˜getting itโ€™ in your everyday life. Because the messages were very loud and very clear.โ€ Mic drop.
