New York Jets coach Todd Bowles called a rushed news conference Tuesday to announce that quarterback Geno Smith will be out at least 6-10 weeks after an altercation with a teammate led to Smith's jaw being broken.

According to the Associated Press, Jets linebacker Ikemefuna Enemkpali and Smith were involved in a disagreement inside the Jets locker room when Enemkpali reportedly punched the starting quarterback in the face, breaking his jaw.
"It had nothing to do with football," Bowles said. "It was something very childish, and he got coldcocked, sucker punched—whatever you want to call it—in the jaw."
Coach Bowles added that Enemkpali, an outside linebacker in his second season, has been released from the team.
The coach noted that Smith will have to have surgery to repair his jaw but is optimistic about his return to the team.
"Depending on how surgery goes, we'll see where we go from there," Bowles said.
