Nicole Grier, 19, was strapping the child into her car when gunmen riding in a sedan with tinted windows pulled up and opened fire. The babysitter, Camille Watkins, said she was in the shower when she heard five or six shots, the station reported.

Police are hunting for the shooter's car, described as a Lexus with tinted windows.

Details have been slow to emerge, but NBC Miami reports that Watkins' daughter, Satricia Jordan, said that the melee happened shortly after Grier got to her car.

"She was walking to the car and she put her baby inside the car, and thatโ€™s when these two cars came up, a white Lexus and a black BMW," Jordan told the news station.

Jordan added, "She was telling them to stop because she didnโ€™t want that to happen to her, but then they just kept shooting at her."

Grier's family is left struggling to find the funds to pay for her funeral. They held a fundraiser on Wednesday night to help cover the costs.

"It hurts," Grier's father, Keith Bosket, told NBC Miami at the event, where friends and family sold food and T-shirts paying tribute to the slain mom. "We're just coping with it. That's all we can do."

Grier's mother, Tamala Watson, pleaded for the shooters to turn themselves in. "You left an 11-month-old baby without a mother," Watson said. "Someone took her life for nothing."
