The man who police say shot and killed a Maryland firefighter was not charged in his death and was released from custody Saturday, reports USA Today.

Prince George's County firefighter John Ulmschneider, 39, was shot and killed Friday night while responding to a call in Temple Hills, Md., a suburb of Washington, D.C. A second firefighter, 19-year-old Kevin Swain, was also shot and remains in serious condition.
A Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department spokesperson confirms that a man called authorities because he was concerned about his 61-year-old brother, who was not answering his phone or the door, although his car was parked in the driveway. The man is diabetic, and his brother was concerned that he had blacked out.
Firefighters arrived at the home and forced entry. The person inside fired several rounds and hit the two firefighters and the brother who had called.
The brother was not seriously injured. Prince George’s County police have not released the names of the men who were involved in the incident. Police took the shooter into custody, but he was released Saturday.
Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan ordered the state’s flag to be flown at half-staff in Ulmschneider’s memory.
