MAGA ‘Rap’ is the Worst Form of Cultural Appropriation

Tom MacDonald and Ben Shapiro's "Facts" is way, way worse than you think it is.

In 2024, itโ€™s beyond sad that MAGA โ€œrapโ€ has become a thing but thatโ€™s where weโ€™re at. On Friday, Canadian rapper Tom MacDonald released the song โ€œFactsโ€ accompanied by the biggest right-wing troll of them all: Ben Shapiro. MacDonaldโ€™s raggedy discography features songs like โ€œWhite Trash,โ€ โ€œStraight White Maleโ€ and โ€œFake Wokeโ€ (which was predictably promoted by Fox News).

โ€œFactsโ€ falls in line with MacDonaldโ€™s previous efforts and insists white men are being victimized and demonized for no reason by people of color. Interestingly enough, the pair are co-opting a Black art form to disparage Black folks. Itโ€™d be safe to say that the jokes write themselves if the messaging wasnโ€™t so dangerous.

In the videoโ€”which has amassed almost 7 million views on YouTubeโ€”MacDonald vehemently shakes his Pusha T-inspired braids and flaunts his grill alongside Shapiro while spouting lines like: โ€œThereโ€™s only two genders boys and girlsโ€ and โ€œIโ€™m not ashamed because Iโ€™m white/If every Caucasianโ€™s a bigot, I guess every Muslimโ€™s a terrorist, every liberal is right.โ€

MacDonald also laments over American flags being replaced by Black Lives Matter flags and rainbow symbolism. The two cents that Shapiro adds only furthers the white supremacist rhetoric as he states that โ€œwoke Karensโ€ have ruined his comments section but his conservative views still remain extremely profitable.

Shapiro also uses words and phrases like โ€œWAP,โ€ โ€œhomey,โ€ โ€œno capโ€ and โ€œdawgโ€ while simultaneously shouting out Nicki Minaj (Minaj responded on X by stating Shapiroโ€™s musical skills werenโ€™t bad). MacDonald has built an entire careerโ€”if you can call it thatโ€”off of Black culture while propping up racist ideology.

Shapiro has gone after and condemned rap music/Black culture for years. To employ the same artistry you claim to hate for profit is beyond hypocriticalโ€”and pretty much sums up America in its entirety. Minaj co-signing this putridness is disappointing but entirely on brand for her.
