โFollowing the departmentโs rigorous review process to thoroughly consider all relevant factual and legal issues, I have determined that the Justice Department will seek the death penalty,โ Attorney General Loretta Lynch announced Tuesday. โThe nature of the alleged crime and the resulting harm compelled this decision.โ
Roof allegedly walked into Emanuel AME โarmed with a .45-caliber handgun and eight magazines loaded with hollow-point bulletsโ and opened fire, killing nine people, ABC News reports.
Authorities say that Roof, whom officials say held white supremacist views, targeted the historically black church with the intention of harming African-American churchgoers.
