Much lauded and ballyhooed, Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio, who brazenly refused to stop seeking out illegal immigrants in Maricopa, Ariz., even after racial profiling was outlawed, is being sued by the U.S. Justice Department. Justice Department civil rights lawyers filed suit against Arpaio after talks collapsed on a deal to provide federal investigators with documents they requested.ย The suit, filed in federal court in Phoenix, claims the Maricopa County sheriff has failed to cooperate with the investigation into alleged discrimination against Hispanics by Arpaio's law-enforcement officials.ย "The actions of the sheriff's office are unprecedented," said Assistant Attorney General Thomas Perez, chief of the Civil Rights Division. "It is unfortunate that the [Justice] Department was forced to resort to litigation to gain access to public documents and facilities." We guess it's not a stretch that if Arpaio won't cooperate with the U.S. Justice Department, then he's not upholding the law against racial profiling. If Sheriff Arpaio keeps it up, there may very well be a new sheriff in town โ€” other than the U.S. Justice Department.
