In an interview on โIn Depth With Graham Bensinger,โ the โAvengers: Endgameโ star explained that the two actors almost got in a fight while rehearsing Brolinโs lines for a scene in the classic crime drama. In the video, you can catch his comments on the moment beginning at 1:55:05.
โI was trying to remember the structure, and then we rehearsed. It wasnโt that many lines, mostly mine. And Iโm supposed to be super confident,โ Brolin said. โItโs Denzel Washington, man. Itโs, like, not easy. Youโre just this actor who theyโre trying out, seeing if heโs the real thing or not. And I forgot a line.โ
The โOuter Rangeโ star revealed that things quickly went downhill from there. As he looked to the Oscar winner for help, Washington clearly wasnโt in the mood, the incident escalated and Brolin wondered if he was about to fight a legend.
โI put my hand on his shoulder and I said, โWhatโs the line?โ and he hit my hand off and he said, โDonโt ever fโ-ing put your hand on me. And I was like, โHoly sโ-, Iโm gonna scrap with Denzel Washington,โ he said. โThis is crazy.โ Weโre not actors anymoreโฆat least in my mind.โ
Now with the perspective of his own long, successful career behind him, the 56-year-old thinks Washington was just deep in character and preserving his vibe for the scene.
โIn his mind, he was just doing his job. He was that guy. He was Frank Lucas, period. But I didnโt know,โ Brolin said.. โAnd then we got through that moment. I said, โAre you OK?โ He said, โYeah. You?โ I said, โYeah. Can I get my line?โ He said, โGo for it.โ Itโs like heโd said what he needed to say.โ
Brolin explained that the actors โget along very well now,โ with Washington greeting him warmly a year after they made the movie. As an older actor, he totally understands the desire to stay in the moment during a scene.
