A Charlottesville, Va., judge has denied bail to James Alex Fields Jr., the alleged terrorist who is accused of running his vehicle into a crowd of anti-racism protesters on Saturday, killing one and injuring some 19 others.

According to the New York Post, Fields appeared for his court hearing via video from Ablemarle-Charlottesville (Va.) Regional Jail dressed in a black-and-white-striped jumpsuit to answer to charges of second-degree murder in the crash that resulted in the death of 32-year-old paralegal Heather Heyer.
Fields, 20, also faces charges of malicious wounding and failing to stop at the scene of a crash that resulted in a death.
Judge Robert Downer held Fields without bail because of his lack of community ties in Charlottesville and assigned him an attorney.
“I have been advised that someone from the public defender’s office, who we would normally assign to you, has a relative who is involved in the incident,” Downer explained. “So she will not be able to represent you.”
Fields had driven from his hometown in Maumee, Ohio, to attend the racist Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville that soon turned violent and deadly. A former high school teacher of Fields’ said that as a student, he showed intense interest in Nazism and idolized Hitler.
Fields is due back in court Aug. 25.
