The pop star made these comments in an interview published this weekend with The Guardian. Promoting the current leg of her โ€œTogether Againโ€ tour, the singer broke down her decades-spanning career in the interview, before echoing the false and debunked claims that the Vice President is not Black.

Jackson told the journalist in the interview, โ€œWell, you know what they supposedly said? Sheโ€™s not Black. Thatโ€™s what I heard. That sheโ€™s Indian.โ€ In the story, the journalist writes that they were โ€œflooredโ€ upon hearing this, saying that the Vice President has both Black and Indian heritage. Jackson responded, โ€œHer fatherโ€™s white. Thatโ€™s what I was told. I mean, I havenโ€™t watched the news in a few days.โ€ She adds that she was โ€œtoldโ€ that โ€œ they discovered her father was white.โ€

She then went on to say that she does not know if America would be ready for a potential Kamala Harris presidency, saying, โ€œHonestly, I donโ€™t want to answer that because I really, truthfully, donโ€™t know. I think either way it goes is going to be mayhem.โ€

Naturally, many longtime fans of Janetโ€™s have taken to the internet with disappointment in the โ€œRhythm Nationโ€ singer, who has long used her platform to stand up against social injustice worldwide.

One user wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, that Jacksonโ€™s comments, โ€œjust goes to show you how out of touch some celebrities are. Iโ€™ve always loved her but repeating lies!? Smh. If you donโ€™t know about a subject, then donโ€™t speak on itโ€ฆ especially with your platform. Educate yourself, please!โ€

Another user shared similar sentiments, writing โ€œJanet Jackson! Girl!!!!!โ€ above a meme of Tiffany โ€œNew Yorkโ€ Pollard saying, โ€œnot youโ€ repeatedly while shaking her head.

Another user wrote, that icons โ€œare allowed one slip up in their career imo,โ€ but that she better not โ€œlet it happen again. โ€œI donโ€™t believe Janet Jackson has enough political impact to swing the election in a significant way so Iโ€™m choosing to ignore this misstep for the sake of her iconary.โ€

However, another user mused that this speaks to a larger misinformation issue in the country at large, writing, โ€œWe have a misinformation crisis in America. And itโ€™s been created and fueled with intention to sow distrust. Itโ€™s unfortunate to hear such a high profile person like Janet Jackson parroting it, but itโ€™s a reminder of how far reaching it can get.โ€
