The pop star made these comments in an interview published this weekend with The Guardian. Promoting the current leg of her โTogether Againโ tour, the singer broke down her decades-spanning career in the interview, before echoing the false and debunked claims that the Vice President is not Black.
Jackson told the journalist in the interview, โWell, you know what they supposedly said? Sheโs not Black. Thatโs what I heard. That sheโs Indian.โ In the story, the journalist writes that they were โflooredโ upon hearing this, saying that the Vice President has both Black and Indian heritage. Jackson responded, โHer fatherโs white. Thatโs what I was told. I mean, I havenโt watched the news in a few days.โ She adds that she was โtoldโ that โ they discovered her father was white.โ
She then went on to say that she does not know if America would be ready for a potential Kamala Harris presidency, saying, โHonestly, I donโt want to answer that because I really, truthfully, donโt know. I think either way it goes is going to be mayhem.โ
Naturally, many longtime fans of Janetโs have taken to the internet with disappointment in the โRhythm Nationโ singer, who has long used her platform to stand up against social injustice worldwide.
One user wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, that Jacksonโs comments, โjust goes to show you how out of touch some celebrities are. Iโve always loved her but repeating lies!? Smh. If you donโt know about a subject, then donโt speak on itโฆ especially with your platform. Educate yourself, please!โ
Another user shared similar sentiments, writing โJanet Jackson! Girl!!!!!โ above a meme of Tiffany โNew Yorkโ Pollard saying, โnot youโ repeatedly while shaking her head.
Another user wrote, that icons โare allowed one slip up in their career imo,โ but that she better not โlet it happen again. โI donโt believe Janet Jackson has enough political impact to swing the election in a significant way so Iโm choosing to ignore this misstep for the sake of her iconary.โ
However, another user mused that this speaks to a larger misinformation issue in the country at large, writing, โWe have a misinformation crisis in America. And itโs been created and fueled with intention to sow distrust. Itโs unfortunate to hear such a high profile person like Janet Jackson parroting it, but itโs a reminder of how far reaching it can get.โ
