Officers were called to the townhome in Aurora, Colo. around 3 a.m. after reports of shots fired, Sgt. Cassidee Carlson told the Daily News. An "armed and dangerous" man was inside the home and has refused to surrender to police, she said.

Roads leading to the home were closed off as police tried to seal the scene. Neighbors told local media that they smelled tear gas later Saturday morning.

As many as 40 officers, including SWAT teams and hostage negotiators, were on scene for more than six hours after the standoff began.

Last July the suburban Colorado town made news when James Holmes shot and killed numerous moviegoers attending a screening of Dark Knight Rises. Holmes was arrested and charged with 166 counts of murder, attempted murder and other offenses. Holmes returns to court on Monday for a preliminary hearing, according to the Denver Post.
