As 2024 comes to an end, Hollywood is gearing up for the marathon run that is awards season. On Monday, the nominees for the 82nd Golden Globes were announced, and some of our favorite Black stars were recognized.

To the surprise of no one, โWickedโ received multiple nominations for lead actress Cynthia Erivo, supporting actress Ariana Grande, best motion picture musical/comedy and cinematic/box office achievement. Denzel Washington garnered a best supporting actor nod for his work as โGladiator IIโsโ captivating villain Macrinus.
Colman Domingo is widely considered a frontrunner for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for his extraordinary performance in โSing Sing.โ However, itโs very disappointing to see that the supporting cast and the film itself werenโt nominated.
Weโre also a little shocked to see โThe Piano Lessonโ totally shut out of the nominations. While we werenโt expecting it to get nods across the board, we at least thought Danielle Deadwyler would get nominated for Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture Drama. The Globes have a reputation for focusing on what makes a good TV show instead of recognizing the best performances of the year, so this doesnโt mean its awards season hopes are done. However, this certainly doesnโt help โThe Piano Lessonโsโ chances moving forward.
And speaking of disappointing snubs, itโs time for our annual rant against how the Golden Globes categorizes TV nominees. First of all, โThe Bear, great as it is, IS NOT A COMEDY! Yes, weโre yelling, because these awards organizations didnโt hear us the first million times we shouted it. Itโs a very compelling short drama series. We cannot understand why this is so hard to figure out.
Anyway, back to the Globesโ category issues. When it comes to TV, the body doesnโt separate supporting roles between comedy, drama and limited/anthology series. Thereโs clearly a difference between the performances in these various genres and itโs weird that the Globes recognizes this in leading categories, but not supporting.
This baffling decision is probably why โAbbott Elementaryโsโ Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph werenโt included among the Supporting Actress Television nominees. Tyler James Williams was also snubbed.
Weโre also wondering how Eddie Redmayne was nominated for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Series Drama for โThe Day of the Jackal,โ the series was also recognized for Best Television Series Drama, and Lashana Lynch didnโt get a nod? So he was great, the show was great, but the female lead wasnโt worthy?
As it announced its nominees, the Golden Globes also revealed that there will be a dinner before the awards ceremony where Viola Davis is honored with the Cecil B. Demille Award and Ted Danson receives the Carol Burnett Award. Does this mean Davis wonโt get a big tribute on the main show, because we have a problem with that.
If you need to know if โWickedโ will cast a magical spell on awards season, the 82nd Annual Golden Globes air live Sunday, Jan. 5 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on CBS and Paramont+ With SHOWTIME.
