According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Donnell M. Phelps was killed after trying to stop a man who began harassing the three women as they left the Fort Valley State University campus cafeteria.

Police arrested former student Joseph Anthony Scott, 24. He has been charged with murder, aggravated assault and possessing a knife while committing a felony.

"[Scott] was being offensive โ€ฆ touching [the women] in a very inappropriate way," Georgia Bureau of Investigations agent J.T. Ricketson told the newspaper.

Phelps attempted to help the women and was allegedly stabbed multiple times by Scott before Scott fled, Ricketson told the newspaper.

Scott then reportedly stopped at a main-gate guard station and stabbed Public Safety Officer Ernest Johnson after he opened the door. Johnson's injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Scott was stopped by students and university staff, who subdued him until police arrived.

โ€œMy heart and the hearts of the entire Fort Valley State University community go out to the Phelps family," Fort Valley State President Paul Jones said in a statement viewed by the newspaper.
