First, They Deemed Kamala Harris a Slave, Now This Jim Crow Nonsense in Denver

The disgraceful signs appeared around bus stops all around the city.

First, the National Federation of Republican Assemblies insisted that Vice President Kamala Harris canโ€™t run for President because of the defunct and racist 1857 Dred Scott Supreme Court decision that said slaves werenโ€™t citizens (a decision that has long been overturned, by the way). Most important, sheโ€™s not a slave.

Now, Harris detractors have pulled another racist stuntโ€”and this time it references Jim Crow.

On Thursday, Denver City Councilwoman Shontel Lewis posted photos on X that revealed repulsive signage placed at a local bus stop. One sign stated: โ€œBlacks must sit at the back of the bus. Kamalaโ€™s migrants sit in the front.โ€

Named after a Black minstrel show character, Jim Crow laws legalized racial segregation from post-Civil War to 1968. These laws lasted around a century, with racial segregation on public buses being one of its most infamous policies.

A second yellow caution sign was posted directly underneath that warned riders of โ€œKamalaโ€™s illegalsโ€ with images of people running which is suppose represent immigrants sneaking across the border. According to The Denver Post, investigators are currently working to remove them.

The caution sign is designed after real road signage that was once posted in California. It warned drivers near the San Diego border to keep an eye out for migrants running across the freeway. In 2018, the last of those signs were finally removed.

In her post, Lewis stated: โ€œI wish I could say I were surprised, but in a year when a Black woman could become POTUS those with hate in their heart are going to coordinate these kind of atrocious, expensive campaigns to stir division.โ€

The right has pushed racist rhetoric for a while and under Trumpโ€™s guidance, theyโ€™ve only gotten worse. For example, Harris has been accused of suddenly โ€œturning Blackโ€ by the former presidentโ€”despite that not being an actual thing that Black people can do. And letโ€™ s not forget her father is Black.

Harris has also been labeled a โ€œDEI hireโ€ by conservatives attempting to undermine her experience.ย Do you think these attacks show just how much of a threat she isโ€”and will continue to beโ€”to the Republican party on her quest for the White House?
