Adan, who worked part time as a private security guard for an Electrolux factory, put on a uniform and went into the Crossroads Center shopping mall in St. Cloud, Minn., armed with what is said to have been a kitchen knife. The attack took just 10 minutes before Adan was killed.

The motive behind the stabbings is still unclear, and the news came as quite a shock to his family.

"As we mourn the death of our son, Dahir Adan, who was very dear to us, we are in deep shock as everyone else is in the state of Minnesota," read a statement from Adan's family.

According to CBS News, an ISIS-run news agency claimed that the attacker was a "soldier of the Islamic State." Adan was a Somali refugee who came to the U.S. as a baby, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Rick Thornton said that the attack is being investigated as a "potential act of terrorism," according to CBS News. This incident would be the first terrorist attack carried by a Somali on U.S. soil, if, in fact, the stabbings are ultimately deemed an act of terrorism.

President Barack Obama said that there is no apparent connection between the bombings in the New York City area and the incident in Minnesota.
