A 19-year-old Washington, D.C., teenager who went out with friends Saturday night in a pair of $200 sneakers his mother had bought him was killed over them near a bus stop in a hail of gunfire.
David Lee Robinson, 19, was found dead by police, who aren't sure whether the shots were exchanged before or after the robbery. A gun was found on the scene. They have not said if Robinson or the person who was with him used it.
Jamal Crawford, who was close to Robinson, was dumbfounded over what people actually kill for these days. "It hurts, it really hurts, and I mean, for a pair of shoes?” said Crawford. "It's just sad for some shoes. If you want my shoes, you can have them. You don't have to take my life; just take my shoes. He had a son on the way. It hurts."
D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray commented on the murder of Robinson, who was shot in the back. "When you look at the circumstances, it was a robbery. The victim was being robbed by the perpetrator, who has not been apprehended as of yet, but he was being robbed for his Nike tennis shoes,” said Gray.
Police are looking for a small gray or silver SUV with bullet holes and broken glass.
While both parties were reported to be carrying guns, if this young man was really set upon by a group of young men his age (we suppose) over a pair of sneakers, we just have to do better.
