In the last month, we’ve lost quite a few Black legends. Now. we’re reeling from the passing of an actor who was an essential part of our most culturally significant stories. On Tuesday, K.C. Amos confirmed the death of his father, actor John Amos, at the age of 84. According to People, the “Good Times” star died of natural causes on Aug. 21.

“Many fans consider him their TV father,” K.C. wrote in a statement. “He lived a good life. His legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor.”
In addition to “Good Times,” Amos was beloved for his roles in “Roots;” “Die Hard 2;” “Coming to America;” and “The West Wing.”
“My father loved working as an actor throughout his entire life,” K.C. continued.. “Most recently in ‘Suits LA’ playing himself and our documentary about his life journey as an actor, ‘America’s Dad.’ He was my dad, my best friend, and my hero. Thank you for your prayers and support at this time.”
On social media, fans celebrated his legacy, many of them using the famous moment of Esther Rolle’s Florida Evans breaking down and yelling “Damn, damn, damn” after James’ death to convey their emotions.
In fact, one person used James’ signature line to remember the star, posting, “DAMN DAMN DAMN! RIP to a great actor and one of the best TV & movie dads ever John Amos.”
Someone else remembered his most famous roles, writing on X, “John James Kunta Kinte-Evans-Mcdowell-Amos?! LAWD NO!”
Another person recalled the impact he made on them with his work, posting, “What a loss to the world. Great actor. He also did an excellent job starring in Roots — when I watched it as a kid, I was completely drawn in by his performance. RIP, John Amos.”
One user referenced the recent losses of Black legends, writing on X, “Damn damn damn!!! RIP John Amos…Divo down…man this has been a hard two days. The legends are being called home. May the ancestors help in your journey home.”
From “Good Times,” to “Roots,” to “Coming to America,” John Amos spent his career uplifting Black culture and entertainment. His legacy can be found in all the artists he inspired with his amazing talent.
