The 1977 Florida law banning gays from adoption children has been officially overturned. Gov. Charlie Crist announced that Florida will immediately stop enforcing its ban on adoptions by gay people, following a decision by a state appeals court that the three-decade-old law is unconstitutional. "It's a great day for children. Children deserve a loving home," said Crist, who backtracked on his anti-gay rhetoric, issuing a proposition paper earlier this month supporting gay rights, including adoption rights. Could it be the aspersions cast on Crist's alleged predilections in the documentary Outrage that persuaded him to change his views? According to the article, the prohibition was first enacted in 1977 and is the only law of its kind in the nation. Arkansas and Utah ban any unmarried straight or gay couples from adopting or fostering children. Mississippi bans gay couples, but not single gays, from adopting. Go figure. With the overturning of this ban, hopefully other gay-rights issues will gain some traction. In the words of gay icon and fashionista Ru Paul, to the judges and legislators, "Don't f—- it up!"
