"A 14-year-old boy was shot in the back of the head and critically wounded this morning as he was walking with his mother on the Northwest Side, authorities said.

The shooting took place in the 3400 block of West Armitage Avenue in the Logan Square neighborhood, police and witnesses said. The boy was shot about 9:10 a.m., said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Quention Curtis.

The boy was walking with his mother about 9 a.m. when a man or boy in his late teens or early 20s came up and after shouting and flashing gang signs, shot the boy, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer JoAnn Taylor. The attacker then fled on foot, she said.

The teen was taken to Children's Memorial Hospital in serious-to-critical condition after initially heading to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, Curtis said."
