The city of Charlottesville, Va., is planning to cover the statues of Confederate Gens. Robert E. Lee and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson in black fabric to represent the city’s mourning of Heather Heyer.

The Daily Progress reports that the City Council voted unanimously early Tuesday to drape the fabric in Heyer’s honor. Heyer, 32, was killed earlier this month after authorities say a car driven by a white nationalist slammed into a crowd of anti-racist protesters at a violent white nationalist rally in the city. At least 30 others were injured in the attack.
The vote came after a tense council meeting Monday evening, the first since the rally. The Daily Progress reports that some residents screamed and cursed at councilors, calling for their resignations.
The news site reports that about a half an hour into the meeting, the entire City Council retreated into another room. Two women then stood on top of dais holding a banner that proclaimed, “Blood on your hands.”
The Associated Press reports that three people were arrested and released on summonses for disorderly conduct.
