In today’s era of remakes and reboots, there’s one show that consistently comes up in online conversation from folks begging to see it back on their screens: Girlfriends.

Starring Tracee Ellis Ross, Golden Brooks, Persia White, Jill Marie Jones and Reggie Hayes and created by Mara Brock Akil, the popular 90s show made a resurgence over the last few years thanks to streaming companies re-airing the episodes, online memes and pop culture references. Now in a new interview with the show’s executive producer Kelsey Grammar, it appears the probability of bringing the show back to life may be higher than ever.
“I would love to reboot Girlfriends. Of course, it would probably be a different kind of show, but we got The Game back on and that was wonderful,” he told Deadline. “I don’t know if Paramount+ is gonna grab another season of that but you never know. I think they should because I know many people who love that show and love those characters and would like to see them continue. We’ll see what happens. But yeah, I would love to reboot Girlfriends and I would love to see Tracee [Ellis Ross] in that role again. She was terrific in that.”
He concluded, “The show was a wonderful opportunity to see all those young women start out. It’s such a beautiful ensemble effort and I was very proud to be connected to that.”
Thankfully, Kelsey isn’t alone in his desire to see the gang back together again. Speaking to The Root back in June, Persia herself expressed that she and the rest of the ladies are also willing to see some sort of reunion happen.
“I wanted something, or even just line a finale film, like people kept asking,” she explained. “As a writer and producer now, I have tried but the rights are not owned by us. It’s very complicated because it’s owned by Mara and the studio. And if those entities don’t want it to happen or they’re too busy with their projects and don’t want it to happen—then it can’t happen. We’ve all actively said ‘yeah, we’ll do it.’”
Look, Hollywood—it’s been 15 years and we all haven’t stopped begging yet. Give us what we want! With the success of shows like And Just Like That and The Best Man: The Final Chapters, it’s clear the appetite for seeing a good ensemble cast back together again for some sort of continuation story is wanted.
