But Baldwin did not do those things, opting instead to let loose a bunch of cringe-worthy statements to THR, including worries that #MeToo is a fire that โ€œneeds constant kindlingโ€ and, well, how much black people just love him since he started playing Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live.

โ€œI donโ€™t know how to say this and I donโ€™t want to get it wrong either, because everything is a minefield of bombs going off,โ€ Baldwin tells THR, as he winds up to hurl his grenade. โ€œBut ever since I played Trump, black people love me. They love me. Everywhere I go, black people go crazy.โ€

But wait. Letโ€™s backtrack a bit. Where did this even come fromโ€”you, a reasonable person, might ask.

If THR is to be believed, it started with an encounter with Tyrone. Seriously.

Hereโ€™s what reporter Lacey Rose observed in her piece:

As we leave Rayโ€™s on an overcast mid-September afternoon, a young man hollers, โ€œDuuuude, you do that Donald Trump thing real good. Real good.โ€ The man introduces himself as Tyrone, and though heโ€™s waving and pointing and causing something of a scene, the often-irritable Baldwin doesnโ€™t mind a bit. In fact, he calls Tyrone over and the two begin cracking each other up. Itโ€™s hard to tell whoโ€™s enjoying the other more.

Flash forward to Martin Luther Baldwin, apparently inspired by Tyroneโ€™s love for him, getting into the back of an SUV to drop this little nugget:

โ€œEverywhere I go, black people go crazy. I think itโ€™s because theyโ€™re most afraid of Trump. Iโ€™m not going to paint every African-American person with the same brush, butโ€โ€”ah, there goes that โ€œbutโ€ againโ€” โ€œa significant number of them are sitting there going, โ€˜This is going to be bad for black folks.โ€™โ€

We donโ€™t know whether Baldwin realized later that his comment was just a little reminiscent of Trump himself, who also boasts about โ€œhaving a great relationship with the blacks.โ€ Probably not.

Either way, I blame Tyrone.
