In a recent interview on the โThe Coversation with Amanda de Cadenetโ podcast, Haddish opened up about her sobriety journey following her controversial Thanksgiving 2023 DUI arrest.
As previously reported by The Root, the โNight Schoolโ star was arrested in the wee hours on Black Friday morning in Nov. 2023, in Los Angeles after having previously performed at the Laugh Factory in West Hollywood earlier that evening for the clubโs 43rd annual free community Thanksgiving feast.
Around 5:45 a.m. PT, someone alerted Beverly Hills Police Department that there was a person stopped in the middle of Beverly Drive, with the driver reportedly โslumped over the wheelโ while the car was still running. When police showed up, they found Haddish and she was subsequently taken to jail without incident for suspicion of driving under the influence. No one was injured in the incident.
As a result, the โLike a Bossโ star pleaded no contest to reckless driving and took a plea deal which resulted in her getting the two misdemeanor charges dropped altogether. Her charges were reduced down to โwet reckless,โ which means Haddishโs license wonโt be suspended like it would have been had she actually been officially charged with a DUI.
In a statement to People, Haddishโs attorney said at the time: โMs. Haddish has agreed to a simple vehicle code violation (not driving under the influence, which has been dismissed) and looks forward to this being behind her.โ
Now, in this latest intervew, Haddish shared how sheโs been taking charge of her health and getting a grip on her relationship with alcohol, which she describes as not her โnot that hard.โ
โItโs not that hard because it wasnโt really like my main thing anyway,โ Haddish explained. โYou know what I found out my main thing is? Meat, chicken, beefโฆ and candy.โ
Later, when asked if she considered herself sober, Haddish said: โI consider myself being obedient to the law. Itโs court mandated. Two years, Iโve been waiting for my hearing in Georgia, and what happened in LA triggered Georgia.โ
The โNobodyโs Foolโ star also touched on her relationship with smoking weed, explaining that she only did so to help with her endometriosis diagnosis. However, now sheโs embarked on a more raw vegan regimen as a replacement.
Additionally, a source close to Haddish told Page Six that the comedian was โserious about her sobrietyโ and โvery into her health right now. Sheโs going through her changes and is doing amazing.โ
