According to the Associated Press, the Tompkins County, N.Y., District Attorneyโ€™s Office announced Monday that it added the new count to 19-year-old John Greenwoodโ€™s growing list of charges. Greenwood also faces charges of aggravated harassment and criminal mischief.

Ithaca, N.Y., police picked up Greenwood on assault charges back in September after a black Cornell student said that he was attacked outside his home near campus by several people yelling racial slurs.

Greenwood admitted to having used the racial slurs, apologizing for the โ€œunacceptable and inappropriate languageโ€ he used and claiming โ€œfull responsibilityโ€ for his words, authorities said. He did not, however, mention the group attack of which he is accused of being a part.

His defense attorney Ray Schlather insisted that Greenwood โ€œwas not involved in any physical altercation,โ€ claiming that physical evidence contradicts what the victim says happened after a verbal altercation.

The victim, a Cornell junior who remains unidentified, says that he came home around 1 a.m. to find a group of students arguing with his housemates. When he asked those students to leave, he says, the others insulted him and called him the n-word before a group of four or five of them began to punch him.
